Articles - In-Depth Informative Aviation ArticlesI actually do have experience writing for book and periodical publishers. One thing I learned was that most publishers are looking for content that appeals to the masses. Since the publishers are in the business to make money, this does make good business sense. From the reader's standpoint, this is unfortunate because there are many topics that are never covered at all. Other topics are covered, but not to the depth we would like when we want to keep developing our knowledge. This is simply because either the topics are considered too specialized or in more depth than most are interested. Additionally, writers are almost always constrained to a word or page limit. The designers typically have very specific ideas of how much printed space the content will take up. This is one advantage that the Internet offers as a publishing medium. Typically an article on the Internet can be as long as it needs to be. The publishing cost is minimal, so more specialized topics are permitted. The potential down-side to this is that literally anyone can publish anything on the Internet. As a result, not everything published on the Internet is worth reading. If you are looking for more reliable in-depth articles on aviation related topics, you should investigate some of the more prominent aviation news websites. This became apparent to me when I saw a reference to an article that is posted on AvWeb.com. I know that a great many chapter members are familiar with this website. I had been aware of it because I had referenced it to get details on some of the latest aviation news stories. I never really ventured into the Articles section. Some of the articles I found provided information I have been hearing or wondering about, but I had not found good information resources that would discuss them in the detail I desired. Some of the articles are very advanced, others are directed more for the student pilots. It really does have good content for the entire aviation enthusiast gamut. The Articles section is broken down into several subsections. One of those subsections is Avionics. This provides product reviews, as well as information about technology such as "GPS Explained", and discussions of how many of the more traditional technologies work such as NAV/COMM, DME, ADF, etc. The Columns section also has several very informative articles. Some examples are titled "Beyond The $100 Hamburger", "Making Perfect Landings", "Operations At Non-towered Airports", "Checklists Redux", and many more. Sometimes I don't have time to just sit down at the computer and read all of the many posted articles. However, I frequently find that I have little blocks of time that are otherwise wasted. Sometimes I will print a few articles on paper and take them with me. If I find myself waiting for a few minutes for something like that next meeting, I pull out one of the articles and read a little more about it. A list of all of the article subsections on AvWeb.com are listed below: |
